WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM DO?

Since the programs inception during the fall of 1994 Stepping Stones has served over 700 youth from many tribes across Nevada as well as neighboring states. The initial program has expanded the last decade to meet the growing needs of the populations served in our ever changing world. The human psychological demands of change are particularly difficult for adolescents.

KitchenPrograms that are offered focus on behavioral health, prosocial skill development and personal reflection.  Programs such as Why Try? provides experiential learning activities that allow youth to examine how their behavior and choices lead to difficulties in their lives.  This program works in conjunction with the Ropes Course to reinforce the concepts taught.  The Creating Lasting Family Connections is a group oriented program that aids in understanding responsible drinking behaviors, understanding family roles, and practicing honest, open, and assertive communication.  These programs are facilitated through collaborative efforts with Churchill County Juvenile Probation, Churchill County Parks and Recreation, and New Frontier Treatment Center.

Currently the base funding is provided in part by the Bureau of Indian affairs. Special programs are supported through state, county and federal agencies. The tribe has applied for Medicaid eligibility. This new funding stream would allow a more comprehensive behavioral health service.

MaskA Chafee grant with the Nevada State Division of Child and Family Services provides an Independent Living Program.  This program provides individualized assessments, development of an independent living plan, and teaches the skills necessary for successful transition for youth 12-18 years old.  Stepping Stones is also the hub for the Tribal portion of the states AB-94 funds.  These funds assist youth who have not achieved their basic needs but are no longer eligible for services based on age limitations.

Stepping Stones also provides group work as well as individual guidance in the areas of Spirituality, Values, Self-Esteem, and other topics relevant to the youth’s personal needs. The youth learn healthy alternatives to drug and alcohol use by exposure to a wide array of recreational and cultural activities with emphasis on honoring their tribal traditions and heritage.
