POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Chief of Police, this position is the field or office supervisor with administrative responsibilities for training, scheduling and overseeing a shift or multiple shifts of subordinate Tribal Police Officer(s) and employees of the Law Enforcement Program. Position may represent FPST as a member of a Special Narcotic and Gang Task Force.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the Chiefs direction, schedules shifts for the department and oversees activities on assigned shift.
- Supervises and provides input to evaluations and direction to Tribal Police Officer(s) who work on his/her shift.
- Provides on-the-job training, schedules formal training and reports to the Chief in writing all activities occurring on the shift. Reviews reports of officers on Sergeant’s shift prior to submitting them to Chief.
- Responds to complaints or emergencies, conducts investigations and prepares related reports.
- Takes charge of difficult field situations as needed, including times of emergencies or staffing limitations.
- May testify in court as needed.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Must live within a thirty (30) minute response time to the reservation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Must be skilled and trained in the use of firearms, baton and chemical agents.
- Must have completed or will successfully complete emergency vehicle operator’s course within two (2) months of employment.
- Must have demonstrated the ability to work well with people.
- Must possess knowledge of basic criminal law and police methods and have or be willing to obtain knowledge of Tribal laws.
- Must have and participate in training for; handcuffing techniques, emergency vehicle operator’s course, care and use of firearms, baton and chemical agents.
- Current in CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Certified as instructor in at least two (2) areas relating to Law Enforcement.
- Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in particular Native American, in person and over the telephone, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.

- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Requires a Nevada Post Category 1 certificate
- Three (3) years’ experience in Law Enforcement required; two (2) years supervisory experience required. May consider similar combination of education and/or experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
- Completion of or the ability to successfully complete a first line supervision course.
- Must have knowledge of Law Enforcement principles and practices along with investigation techniques.
- Must be familiar with Tribal, County, State and Federal laws along with DMV codes, and the care and use of firearms.
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified.
- Must have supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to motivate and supervise subordinate employees.
- Must have demonstrated ability to write accurate and concise investigative reports and interview people in stressful situations.
- Must be able to analyze evidence and draw accurate, logical conclusions.
- Must be able to deal courteously but firmly with suspects and remain calm and objective in tense and confusing situations.
- Must be able to respond quickly and per procedure and training, appropriate to the situation.
- Physical Requirements; Candidates must be in good physical condition in accordance with BIA physical standards. A physician must certify that the candidate is capable of sustained, strenuous physical exertion and participation in regular firearm and defensive tactics training.
