POSITION DESCRIPTION

The CLC Cultural and Library Program Coordinator coordinates Tribal cultural activities to meet the cultural preservation activities of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe, and coordinates the library services for the Community Learning Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Coordinate all cultural activities, language preservation classes, meetings and conferences.  Archives all cultural resources, such as, but not limited to the following: CDs, videos, documents to be located in the library.
  2. Manage and maintain cultural inventory located in various locations of the Tribe.
  3. Coordinate cultural preservation programs with Tribal Elders, spiritual leaders, community members, as well as develop community cultural outreach activities.
  4. Responsible for facilitating any cultural related activities like beading, basket making, weaving, cradleboards, sewing, language, art, dance and singing, etc.
  5. Assist in all facets and operations of the CLC including all of the administered programs, as well as with supportive services such as meal/snack preparation and transportation.
  • Perform original cataloging and classification of print, audio-visual and electronic resources and services.
  • Check books in and out of the library using library database.
  • Train library users to effectively search the catalog, internet, and other electronic resources.
  • Manage library resources such as books, periodicals, journals, video/CD/DVDs, photos, and other curriculum and materials.
  • Maintains and promote a reading and learning environment that encourages growth through knowledge, including reading clubs, book fairs, etc.
  • Coordinate cultural activities with department staff to develop and prepare on-going library service projects.
  • Strive through specialized methods to improve Tribal students’ success in reading, and other required core subjects in order to bring students’ academic skills to grade level and above.
  • Analyze and evaluate library and information services, technology, and media services requirements.
  • Coordinate with external organizations to promote the activities of the Tribal Library.
  • Work with Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe’s membership to ensure success of the program.
  • Maintain cleanliness in all program areas; including the upkeep of the equipment and facility in an acceptable manner and the set-up and breakdown during the program day to contribute to ongoing efforts to keep the center orderly.
  1. Performs other program related duties as assigned by the Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position.

  1. At least three (3) years demonstrated experience working with Tribal communities and/or cultural programs.
  2. Ability to demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, teamwork, and initiative.  Have the ability to communicate with individuals at various education levels and have knowledge of working with Tribal communities.
  3. Ability to operate a computer, and knowledge of standard office software application; attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines,
  4. Ability to develop and submit written reports and recommendations,
  5. A high degree of professionalism and initiative, have the ability to communicate with individuals at various education levels and have knowledge of working with Tribal Communities.
  6. Must be able to travel and work flexible hours to ensure program success.
  7. Knowledge and commitment to working with children & adults in an educational setting.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

THIS POSITION REQUIRES COMPLIANCE WITH THE INDIAN CHILD PROTECTION and FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION ACT PUBLIC LAW 101-630; 25 CODE of FEDERAL REGULATIONS PART 63 – INDIAN CHILD PROTECTION and FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION; CRIME CONTROL ACT OF 1990, EMPLOYEE BACKGROUND CHECKS; and EXECUTIVE ORDER 12968, ADJUDICATIVE GUIDELINES AND THEREFORE MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE AN EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND CHECK BEFORE START EMPLOYMENT, and
  2. This position requires that the candidate be a mandated reporter.
  3. High School Diploma or GED equivalent, one (1) year of experience working with children and families, preferably including experience in a library or cultural agency or similar organization.
  4. Experience working with Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe cultural preferred, or other Great Basin tribes.
  5. Must obtain Food Handler’s Card, complete Blood Borne Pathogen training, and CPR certification within six (6) months of start date, and attend IHS Sanitizing class.
