The Chief of Police gives general direction to the department and is in charge of reducing crime in the area of assignment. The responsibilities of the Chief of Police can include organizing events for the department, gathering and planning a police response to a random event that can occur, coming up with new policies and goals for the department, assigning hours to police officers, making sure all police officers in the department are performing as they should be, working with the budget for the department, making arrests and writing tickets and citations, working with public relations to address the community when a crime happens and following all rules under the law. Must be on scene when a crime is reported, gathers the officers and address situations quickly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide administrative oversight of the department operation by preparation of an annual plan and budget, budget modifications, including detailed objectives and activities.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual law enforcement reports for the Administrator, Fallon Paiute- Shoshone Tribe’s Business Council and Bureau of Indian Affairs Western Nevada Agency.
- Draft policy and exercise responsibility and authority for police effectiveness and their actions on all assignments. Investigate citizen complaints regarding the conduct of police officers and report them to the Tribal Administrator. Take action to correct policy or procedure infractions by law enforcement staff.
- Ensures that proper supervision of personnel is maintained and that all paperwork for initial hire, separations and annual performance evaluations are completed accurately and timely. Maintain and ensure that officers are scheduled for regular duty and special assignments.
- Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in enforcement of applicable laws within the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe Reservation whether committed by Indians or Non-Indians.
- Maintain close working relationships with Tribal Government agencies and departments, the community, judicial, social organizations, including coordination with Federal, County and local Municipal law enforcement agencies.
- Ensures that all training standards for the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe are maintained, including coordinating specialized service and formal training as necessary. Conduct and obtain ongoing in-service training for police officers in the latest techniques of law enforcement, use of special equipment, including firearms, modern investigative techniques and current criminal law training.
- Direct the operation of community-oriented policing program to include interaction with community residents, businesses, civil groups, schools and other community service providers. Provide public awareness and education of members in observance of applicable laws of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe.
- Attend the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribal Council Meetings, Tribal Court sessions, Directors’ and other Tribal meetings as required.
- Must live within 30 minutes of the FPST Tribal Police Department
- Performs other job related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Must be willing to work long and arduous hours under extreme conditions as needed.
- Must be skilled in the use of firearms, emergency vehicle operation, First Aid and CPR, self-defense, able to complete clear and concise program reports.
- Must have knowledge of Indian Country jurisdiction, Indian Civil Rights Act (ICRA), Constitutional rights afforded individuals, modern police methods and techniques used to investigate crime, federal, state cases effecting jurisdiction in Indian Country, application of sound administrative and supervisory skills and general administrative procedures.
- Must submit to and pass a thorough background investigation, pre-employment and random drug testing and a thorough medical examination. The background investigation shall include local, state and federal criminal history checks. In addition to meeting Tribal background check requirements must have no felony convictions and no misdemeanor or DUI convictions in the past five (5) years, excluding other traffic violations. Must possess a valid Nevada driver’s license and be eligible under the Tribal vehicle insurance with a verified safe driving record.

- Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Requires a Nevada Post Category 1 certificate.
- A BA Degree in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement, five (5) years of Law Enforcement experience, including two (2) years in Indian Country; or AA plus four (4) years of Law Enforcement experience with two (2) years in Indian Country.
- Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience required.
