SUPERVISOR: Associate Director – Clinical Services RANGE: $56.16 – $67.06 (hourly)
FLSA STATUS: Exempt X Non-Exempt Public Safety TYPE: Part Time (24 hours per week)
This position is responsible for the diagnosing, managing, and treating conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment for patients of the Fallon Tribal Health Center (FTHC).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide primary care optometry services including diagnosis and treatment of eye disease within scope of optometric practice guidelines.
- Provide triage and treatment of urgent/acute eye care problems.
- Prescribe, supply, fit and adjust eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids.
- Educate and consult patients on contact lenses, visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and safety factors.
- Consult with and refer patients to other health care practitioner if additional medical treatment is determined necessary.
- Assist as needed in training Optometry staff in refracting, contact lens fitting, physiology/geometry of optics, retinoscopy, keratometry and lensometry as needed.
- Participate in Head Start and outreach screenings in the tribal communities as needed.
- To attend and participate in staff meetings and appropriate FTHC committees.
- Increase third party revenue through patient care, proper documentation, planning and management of optical clinic resources.
- Participate in the development of optical policies & procedures and adhere to all applicable FTHC policies including infection, quality improvement/assurance, etc. and assure that optical practices meet accreditation requirements.
- Other job related duties as assigned by the supervisor
- Doctor of Optometry Degree and a Nevada license to practice Optometry including certification in the use of diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceuticals.
- Prefer three (3) years of optical experience preferably in Indian Health or tribal clinic setting.
- Enrolled and/or eligible as a Medicaid or other third-party insurance provider.
- Prefer an Optometrist with a valid and active DEA license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

- Knowledge of computer systems, servers, and work stations with preference for working with Greenway Electronic Health Records (EHR).
- Knowledge of ocular procedures and screenings and diabetes and how it affects the retina is required.
- Knowledge of therapeutic pharmaceuticals.
- Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
- Skill in performing ocular screening examinations, refraction, and visual acuity testing, using ETDRS or other standardized means.
- Ability to read and interpret medical records.
- Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
- Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot testing systems and instruments.
- Ability and willingness to provide strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to work with the Native American population and/or low income populations.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and FTHC policies.
- Act as an approved Mandatory Reporter of suspected incidents of child/elder abuse or neglect.
- This position requires compliance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act (Public Law 101-630); Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention regulations (25 CFR Part 63); Employee Background Checks (Crime Control Act of 1990); and Adjudicative Guidelines (Executive Order 12968) and therefore must successfully complete an extensive background check before the start of employment with the Tribe.
BONUS & RETENTION PROVISIONS (pursuant to Healthcare Professional Recruitment & Retention Bonus Structure Policy)
- Retention Bonus: After completion of one (1) year of employment with the Tribe a healthcare professional is eligible for $5,000.00; and after completion of two (2) years of employment with the Tribe a healthcare professional is eligible for $5,000.00
- Sign-On Bonus: A $10,000 bonus to the healthcare provider is available on the first payroll after completing 6 months of employment. If a healthcare provider does not complete six months of employment the amount will be prorated according to the number of days actually worked.
- Relocation Assistance: Up to a maximum of $7,500 for relocation expenses which are reimbursable either directly to the individual and/or to an outside moving company subject the following conditions.
Relocation costs may include, but are not limited to, the following: healthcare provider and immediate family member travel costs, lodging and meal expenses, cost of moving household goods (including insurance), the packing/unpacking of household goods and appliances, first month of rent/mortgage costs, and security/deposit costs for essential utilities. The healthcare provider shall agree in writing to repay any relocation expense if, within one year following the healthcare provider’s start date, the employee terminates employment with the Tribe. Exceptions to repayment of the relocation expense must be approved in writing by the Chairman and Tribal Administrator.
